A new year, a new decade and a fresh start.
As we are welcoming all of our new (and returning) students, we thought we’d introduce ourselves and let you know a bit more about who we are and why we started The Academy.
Who we are
For us, The Academy is a perfect mixture of beauty and business experience. A winning combination in our eyes. At the root of our company and the heart of our business are Kate and Jenny.
Kate is the business mind – the one who deals with the legal bits and the important paperwork. Before the Academy was born, she spent over 20 years working in Corporate Business, Management Consultancy and Property Management. A far stretch from the glitz and glam of the beauty industry, but her broad business experience means she has dealt with all sorts, to dealing with clients and securing business deals, to
knowing her way around a business contract.
Her business mindset means we never miss a trick and stay ahead of the game as a company. Kate’s constantly on the go in the Academy and is the queen of multi-tasking. It’s not uncommon to see her with foils in her hair as she’s on a conference call.
Jenny is all about the beauty; from creating beauty courses from scratch, to training the many students that come through our doors, to ensuring all of our Urban Retreat therapists are up to date with the latest beauty trends. Jenny has almost 20 years in the industry. After completing college, she worked her way up in spas and salons to senior therapist level. She then went on to be a self-employed therapist with a loyal client base. After going back into education to get her teaching degree, the plan to open a beauty training academy was hatched. Not just any academy, one that followed the same high values and strong ethos that Jenny held within the industry.
Her passion for beauty is one that rubs off on the entire business. She’s been known to coax Kate into guinea pigging some of the latest trends on a fun Friday afternoon (brow lamination and cat eye nails to name a few!).
And The Academy was born…
So how did the Academy come to be? After completing beauty training within another centre, Jenny noticed so many issues, from problems with the location to logistics throughout the training. Confiding in her beauty client, Kate – who was also model of choice for the training course – that she wanted to create something bigger and better but had no business background, the idea fell into place. With Kate’s background in business and Jenny’s in beauty, the head of the Dream Team was formed!
And we have never looked back.
The skills and experience that make up the backbone of the Academy are integral parts of any business, especially within the beauty sector. From being self-employed, to starting up or growing your own business, having a well-rounded understanding of the business aspect is so important.
